Benefits of Stitching:
- More Megapixels (higher resolution, more
detail). Nobody wants a fuzzy image if a sharp image is
possible. However, megapixels are expensive. A good
3-Megapixel digital camera (e.g., Olympus C3030) generally costs less
than $300. A good 6-megapixel camera (e.g., Canon D60 or Fuji S1
Pro) costs upwards of $2,000. With stitching, you can obtain
extremely high resolution photos, without the extremely high
cost. Some of the examples which will appear on the following
slides (we show thumbnails to fit your screen) represent originals
having 2-5x as many megapixels as the camera which was used to take
the photos.
- Wider field of view. If you want,
e.g., a 180 degree field of view, you have few other options except
for stitching. The photo below shows a straight path. The
field of view is about 200 degrees.
